The sun shone brightly through the asorted colored trees, the soft breeze rustling the dry leaves. The thick forest was dying, drying out for winter. Another biting wind blew up, causing dry Maple, birch, aspen, and the odd, occassional pine cone fluttering to the ground in an array of colors - orange, red, brown, yellow, and the odd multi colored one. They all settled peacefully when BAM! Big black paws raced quickly through them, sending them flying high up in the air. The paws made a crunching sound as they cracked and cut through the leaves that never got a chance to fly back up into the air. A playful, excited, shrill yapping was heard, echoing through the trees, vibrating off the cliff walls. The yapping was cut off by a sharp yelp, a thud, and an Oof! The little black mound of fur lay in a pile of leaves, the black protesting against the bright colors of the oranges and the yellows. The heap of fur moved, it's sides rising and falling quickly with the owner's heavy breathing. A shrill screech was heard, somewhere up in the tall pine trees. A black head shot up immediatly, black and gray-lined ears pricked in interest. The ears were followed by vivid green and black - streaked eyes, which were frantically searching the trees, then a long, distinct, fine black muzzle. The black nose twitched and breathed in the scents of the forest around it. The little black wolf pup sat up quickly. "Where are you?" She said quietly to herself, her voice light and melodic. The screech sounded again, this time it was behind her. She jumped up and whirled around. Then, her eyes caught a clear white through the green pine needles. Oh! I know what it is! It's a...a... She frowned to herself, trying to remember the name of the great forest brown and white bird that sat regally on the thick branch, it's long, razor sharp, black talons gripping it tightly. The bird watched her closely, thingying its head to the side, twittering to itself.
Oh! It's a Bald Eagle! She had finally remembered the birds name. She pushed herself up onto her powerful hind legs, watching it closely. She wondered what it was like, being able to own the skies, to fly wherever you wanted, to soar freely without a care in the world. She sighed, dropping back onto her front paws moodily. Too bad she wasn't free. "Shadow? Shadow! Oh, Shadow, where are you?!" A slightly frantic, female voice cried from somewhere behind her. The little black pup sighed, mumbling to herself, turning around sullenly. Her keen eyes caught sight of a white and gray pelt streaking through the bushes, following Shadow's previously made path as she had gone bolting through the bushes. The voice called again, and Shadow muttered to herself. She realized she should answer. But then again...her mischevious side kicked in. No, Shadow. No need to worry the nurse. "I'm over here," She called, watching as a long legged, white and gray wolf stepped daintily out of the bushes. Her look was stern, and in Shadow's opinion, was rather ticked off. The old she wolf's legs carried her tiredly over to the small black pup. "There you are!" The old nurse snapped, and her anger was clear. "You will NOT have me running everywhere searching for you, do you understand?" Shadow shifted her paws around, her head hung guiltily. "Yes, Anaja, I understand. And I'm sorry." She mumbled. No pup liked saying sorry. Anaja was the old she - wolf that had been put in charge of Shadow. Shadow didn't know why, she was old enough to be out on her own. Anaja sighed and walked closer to the pup. Shadow's defiant side kicked in. She looked up defiantly, then said in a snotty tone, "Why do I need you to look after me, anyways? I'm old enough to look after myself!" Anaja was slightly surprised at Shadow's tone. "Because, young pup, you never know when those filthy dogs will come around. And yes, I do know that you are indeed old enough to be out on your own..." Anaja flopped down in the leaves while saying this, "...But sadly enough, you are still young, and need correcting every now and then." Shadow rolled her eyes. Fond as she was of the old she-wolf, Shadow was bound and determind to get her point across.
"I don't need correcting, I'm perfectly fine! I caught my first grouse yesterday!" She admitted proudly, raising her tail high. As much as she loved birds, the creature had been such easy prey, just sitting on the forest floor and preening its feathers. Shadow was rather excited now. "I snuck up behind it and then POW! I pounced on it and I bit it's neck, snapping i--" By this time, Anaja growled at the year old pup. "Shadow, please spare me the...ah, lovely...details of your kill. Thank you, dear." Shadow did worry the nurse sometimes. She seemed to have a natural love for blood and guts, so to speak. Anaja sighed, yawning. Her powerful jaws opened wide, revealing sparkling white fangs and teeth. "Well, we'd better be getting back to the pack now, Shadow. Come on, now." The old gray wolf pushed herself up, her amber eyes tired. She turned and was about to leave, back the way they came, when Shadow started protesting. "Aww, do we have to? I would really like to stay out here...Please, Anaja? I promise to be good...Or better yet, why don't you go? I promise to stay right here, please?" Anaja turned her large head to look back at the pup. She sighed. She really was getting too old for this. "Shadow, come on, now." Shadow whined, lowering her black head. She jumped up playfully, bounding over to the old nurse. She was almost half the size of the gray wolf, and she was still growing fast. "Please?" She begged, whining and yapping. Against her better judgment, Anaja dipped her head in agreement. "Very well. But please, PLEASE, Shadow, stay here, ok?" Shadow jumped up, her legs propelling her up high. "Yes! Thank you, Anaja! I promise to be good and stay here!"
Anaja sighed, shaking her head and she made her weary way back towards the packlands, dissapearing into the thick bushes. Shadow was just happy to be alone, thinking to herself as she rolled around in the leaves. Suddenly, though, a loud, deafening crack rang through the forest, making Shadow gasp and roll over, her head twisted towards the direction the sound had come from. Wait...wasn't that the way Anaja had gone, too? "Anaja!" Shadow cried, fear starting to grip her chest. She knew that sound. She knew it well. It was mans guns, the deadly weapons they had used to slaughter her parents and other animals. Shadow quickly ran through the trees, fear causing her to run faster than she ever had before. A streak of white caught her green eyes. Oh no... She thought to herself, fearing the worst. She slowed herself down to a trembling walk, as she walked closer to the heap of gray and white fur laying on the earth. Shadow gasped when she realized it was Anaja. A streak of deep red oozed from a wound in her beautiful head. Agony started to creep up on the young wolf. Anaja was all Shadow had...and now she was gone. The pup threw her head up to the sky, letting out a long, mournful, pain filled howl. She was alone now, with no one around to comfort her, no one to make her feel loved and wanted...she was alone...
